Business Facilities ranked AIDT number two in the country
Saturday, 01 August 2020 17:09Business Facilities, an economic development-focused publication, ranked AIDT number two in the country within the rebranded Workforce Development / Talent Acquisition category. This ranking marks eight consecutive years AIDT has placed in the top five of the rankings with seven of those years in the top two. AIDT is the primary workforce training agency in the state and one of Alabama’s top incentives in the recruitment of business and industry.
For nearly 50 years, AIDT’s commitment to economic and industrial growth within the state has resulted in approximately 5,200 companies assisted and nearly 1 million citizens equipped with valuable skills and abilities. AIDT’s economic impact reached $7 billion in 2019.
AIDT has stayed at the forefront of workforce development through its innovative approaches to common issues, and its ability to partner with education and industry leaders, as well as other state agencies. This includes the continuous evolution of training techniques such as e-learning, virtual reality training, and more traditional hands-on learning.
“Part of the key to our success is that we are constantly looking for ways to improve upon our processes,” said Ed Castile, director of AIDT and head of Commerce’s Workforce Development Division. “AIDT not only delivers what companies need to meet their demands today but continues to innovate and develop ways to deliver what companies will need in the future.”
The mission of AIDT is to provide quality workforce development for Alabama’s new and expanding businesses, and to expand the opportunities of its citizens through the jobs these businesses create. AIDT designs and creates a fully customized training experience and delivers quality candidates to meet the hiring needs of any industry.
Business Facilities also ranked Alabama’s business climate in the top four among the states in an analysis that examined performance in several key economic categories. The publication cited the state’s central Gulf Coast location, thriving automotive and aerospace sectors, as well as its strong workforce development program as primary incentives for businesses looking to locate in the south.

To combat the spread of the COVID-19, AIDT, in accordance with direction from Governor Kay Ivey, Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield, ADPH, and the CDC is following the Governor’s Safer At Home order.
As part of our plan to limit potential exposure to COVID-19, we have limited the size of training classes and will follow strict social distancing guidelines. Masks will be required at all times in class. We will provide you a mask each night of the class if you don’t have one. After each class, the training area will be sanitized for the next day.
If you are sick or are showing any signs of the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus, you will not be admitted to any class. If you do not feel comfortable attending a class that you are scheduled for, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The email should include the following information:
- Class/Company Name
- Your Name
- Your Email you used to register for class
- A Working Phone number
- A short note that says you will not be attending class and why.
When we receive the email, we will notify the project manager that you will not be attending class. It is very important that you send this email. This email will allow us to put you into a different class for the same company later once the emergency conditions have been lifted. There will be absolutely no penalty to you if you chose not to attend class, but you have to let us know.

Virtual Reality Welding @ the MTC

The Maritime Training Center has a new addition to its workforce: The Miller Augmented Arc. Miller’s Augmented Arc is an incredibly realistic virtual welding system that includes curriculum and quizzes, both standard and customizable, and welding exercises in a large variety of welding styles and positions. This equipment is designed to help students with no welding experience get an idea of the knowledge required to weld before they even set foot on the shop floor. This includes arc length, speed, work angle, and travel angle.
We will also be bringing this equipment at events like Worlds of Opportunity as a fun way to create an interest in welding for younger students, so be on the look out!

Recently, Ryan Blythe of the Cobb Business Journal visited the Annual Gulf State Shipbuilders Consortium in Mobile, Alabama. He wrote about his assessment of the industry and of Alabama's investment in this industry. His article includes the Maritime Training Center. AWS Skills USA Competition

On March 2, 2018 the Maritime Training Center hosted the AWS Skills USA competition. Competing in the Southwest Alabama district were 26 students from 12 high schools. Gold winner Angel Manzano (South Baldwin Center for Technology), silver winner Cody Stitt (South Baldwin Center for Technology), and bronze winner Dylon Williams (South Baldwin Center for Technology) will move on to state finals in Birmingham April 23-25, 2018.

CGIA Student/Industry Hiring Conference

Recent graduates from CGIA endorsed programs were invited to meet with hiring representatives from Alabama Power Company, AM/NS Calvert, Austal USA, Brown & Root Industrial Services LLC, Chevron Pascagoula Refinery, Evonik Corporation, Huntington Ingalls Industries, I.B.E.W. Local Union 903, Millwright Local 1192, Turner Industries Group, UA Gulf Coast District Council No. 1, and Zachry Group. Over 150 guests were in attendance to discuss job opportunities and to enjoy lunch.

8 Graduate from Maritime Foundations Class

The Bay Minette Career Center partnered with Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) to host a Maritime Foundations Class for Baldwin County resident. The class is also offered in Mobile County, but the need was there to offer it in other locations for those unable to travel to Mobile. The Career Center offered multiple schedules to accommodate different work schedules. Eight people completed the class and received their certificates.
According to Career Center Manager Vivian Havel, “We are very proud of these graduates. Hopefully, they will be able to continue with other AIDT courses and begin careers in the Maritime Industry. This was a great opportunity for our center to partner with AIDT to meet workforce needs in our community.”
The class is designed to review and improve math and measurement skills as well as soft skills needed to enter other AIDT courses such as the Maritime Welding Class. Two of these graduates are already enrolled in the July welding class.

Maritime Center hosts career fair for 300 students to learn about technology careers in Alabama
Thursday, 06 April 2017 09:41Nearly 300 Mobile and Baldwin County high school students attended a career fair Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at AIDT's Maritime Training Center in Mobile.
Jeff Lynn, senior executive director of workforce and economic development for the two-year college system, said Tuesday's event was co-hosted by ACCS and AIDT to give students a glimpse of 21st-century manufacturing careers.
"With two years of education, our students can enter the workforce with no debt and make a good living to support themselves and their families," Lynn said. "We want students in Alabama to know these opportunities exist."
Jacqueline Allen, communications manager for AIDT, said the agency's partnership with the two-year college system "allows Alabama to produce people who are ready for careers."
"These are high-skill, high-demand, high-salary jobs," Allen said. "You need training for them. When you're finished with your training, you can find jobs that pay $40,000 or $50,000 a year."
In addition to presentations by Coastal Alabama and Bishop State community colleges, students interacted with industry representatives from Austal USA, Ingalls Shipbuilding, Wesco, Alabama Power Co., Technical Training Aids, Mitternight Boiler Works, Performance Contractors and the Alabama National Guard.
